ASUU: FG takes action to address strike threat

The leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is set to meet with the Federal Government on Monday to discuss the concerns raised by university lectures and to prevent a potential strike.

ASUU has expressed frustration over the federal government's repeated failures to fulfill its commitments regarding the ongoing challenges facing Nigeria's universities.

Emmanuel Osodeke, the union's president, shared this information during a visit to the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture in Abia, where he revealed the results of ASUU's national executive council (NEC) meeting.

On Wednesday, the union issued a 21-day strike notice to the government, urging the administration led by President Bola Tinubu to tackle all outstanding issues that hinder the progress of Nigerian universities.

Osodeke pointed out that both federal and state governments appear to have neglected the matters that led to ASUU's previous strikes.

He mentioned that the NEC has received concerning reports regarding the government's unfulfilled promises made during the 2022 strike.

Osodeke criticized the education minister's "slow pace of intervention" in addressing these pressing issues.

Additionally, the ASUU president announced that September 10 will be a day of solidarity for members who have faced "unjust persecution" at various universities.
